So the rant yesterday might’ve been a bit harsh, but I still think it’s true. The fact that people nowadays just can’t seem to arrive on time nowadays is a truth that I’ve learned to accept. Also I’ve learned that it doesn’t do a person well to be angry over the tiniest bits of details all the time. It just seems like a waste of effort to me. Just spend your time on something more productive like sleeping.
In line with that thought, I present to you my tried and tested anti-boredom kit. It doesn’t matter where you are or who you’re meeting with; if you have these in your bag it’s almost a guarantee that you won’t get restless with boredom during those times that you arrive earlier than your friend/co-worker/whatever. The only down side is that you’ll have to carry a huge ass bag everywhere to have these in your possession at all times.
1. A good book. Do not underestimate the power of a good book on your hands whenever you’re out there, killing time. All you need is a bit of imagination and both your eyes and your good to go for hours, immersed in Tolkien’s Middle-earth or in Jane Austen’s 19th century England.
2. An Ipod. Or any a Zune, or any kind of music player out there, really. As long as it houses your music collection, in whole or in parts, you’re sold. It’s especially helpful when you’re in one of those crowded places and you can’t stand the inane chatter around you. I’m almost ashamed to admit it but even I went through that phase where I had my ear buds on me everywhere I went.
3. A notebook and pen. Especially useful if you’re working on a story of some sort. You never know when inspiration’s going to strike so I guess it is best to be prepared. Even if you’re not a writer you can still go out and jot down your observations. There are a lot of funny/weird people out there and you’d be surprised to read the things you actually saw.
4. A journal. Because blogging is simply quite not enough for me, I also keep a journal in longhand. I always keep it with me everywhere I go and make it a point to put down some thoughts and feelings that I have for that particular moment, just so I can have the pleasure of reminiscing when I reread entries.
5. A Sudoku puzzle. For the nerd in you. But seriously they’re fun and sort of time consuming. Personally it keeps me awake during those warm slow afternoons so if you’re sleepy and bored, this might wake you up.
6. An academic book. If you’re a student or a person preparing for an exam, every minute counts, doesn’t it? Just because you’re outside and away from your home doesn’t mean you’re excused from studying. It’s hitting two birds with one stone when you’ve managed to kill time and managed to get some work done.
7. A video player. If you’re a movie buff, this is a sure fire way to kill at least two hours. And all you need is a vide player!
8. A laptop. Why not, right? It’s supposed to be carried around virtually everywhere anyway.
While these are mere suggestions, I do hope that they help. Take your pick from the list and I wish you luck on keeping your cool the next time you’re made to wait for someone somewhere.
