I am not the world’s biggest fan of chick literature, anybody who’s spoken more than five sentences to me can tell you that. The writing’s almost always too shallow for my tastes and the protagonists far too perfect for me to relate to. They’re all too two-dimensional and their flaws almost always seem like tacked-on afterthoughts, in a last ditch attempt to make the characters seem more human.
That said, I wouldn’t be going anywhere near the Gossip Girl books even if you paid me to.
But, and this is a very big but, I will be the first one to admit that the television series is a guilty pleasure of mine. Don’t ask me why, I still wouldn’t be able to tell you the answer. The humor is okay at the most but the acting and the plot twists are so bad that I do wonder at myself at times.
Sure I can go on and lie to you, saying that I’m totally in it for the clothes, but they’re nothing fantastic or fashion-forward. If anything I think they’re a bit on the extreme side making it a tad tacky. I can also say that I find the whole cast beautiful, that’s why I can’t stay away but that’s not entirely true either. I am not a fan of the actors and the only two people whose faces I find striking are those of Leighton Meester and Chace Crawford. Hey, I like pretty boys; sue me.
The show first aired when I was still in college and was living off in a dorm room with no television. I didn’t really care that I missed the show during the weekdays but at the time it was almost impossible to miss its weekend reruns. It was freakin’ everywhere, everybody was talking about it and it was on five times during the weekends.
So it became a weekly thing, something that I only saw when I happened to chance upon it. Or when I wanted to get updated on who’s sleeping with whom I’d just pop in and watch a couple of minutes’ worth of the show. It wasn’t rocket science; I didn’t need a long time for the show to bring me up to speed.
But I missed out on most of the second season and I’ve just spent the last two days downloading and watching the episodes off the Internet. What brought that on, you ask? Well it’s just that they’ve added this tiny little plot arc where Jenny Humphrey (the token little sister) has a thing with Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford’s character).
There was just something to that particular pairing that got to me. I guess it piqued my interest mostly because I never really saw it coming. I mean she just looks so young and I didn’t really think that they’d actually make a sixteen year-old actress make out with a twenty-four year old actor.
But I guess that’s Hollywood for you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll watch season two’s episode twenty now.
