unravelling the thoughts of an emotional blockhead

I love going out of the house, it always makes me feel oh-so-productive.  Well, that’s mostly because I tend to cluster my tasks so I only have to go to Manila every once in a while.  Commuting is a very expensive activity you know, especially for me because I don’t know how to get to certain places without taking a cab.

So today I ventured out of our home with my parents.  I hitched a ride with them to Makati because I had to check something out with this employment agency I signed up with.  Unfortunately my mother had to leave the office at eight o’clock so I was forced to get out of that sweet little air conditioned haven and onto the streets.

The agency’s office was a jeep’s ride away from Ayala but I knew that it only opened for business at nine.  So I had a whole hour to kill.  What did I do?  I ended up walking the whole length of Ayala to the agency’s office, which took roughly about thirty minutes.  The whole time I endured the stares of all the corporate yuppies whom probably weren’t that used to seeing somebody walk down that particular street in a relaxed manner.

The walk still left me half an hour’s worth of time to kill so I sat down on a convenience store of the gasoline station in front of the building and listened to the Sweeney Todd In Concert soundtrack, effectively killing forty-five minutes.  Then I went to the agency’s office and concluded my business there in less than fifteen minutes *facepalm*.

I got out of the building and hailed a cab to Tomas Morato, where plans were made to have lunch with a couple of friends.  The cab driver looked extremely hesitant to go all the way to Timog and he ended up talking me into taking the MRT to Kamuning.  He said that it would take over an hour to drive all the way to Tomas Morato and the meter would’ve gone up to three hundred bucks.  So he proposed to drop me off in Buendia station MRT and even gave me directions as to what station to get off on, which side of the street to hail a cab from and approximated the cost of that trip.

It was actually a very nice gesture for my part, whatever his motives were; I ended up paying less than half of what I could’ve paid for on the meter alone and I ended up where I wanted to be earlier than I had planned.  I was in Starbucks a good fifteen minutes earlier than my friends and because of that, I had tasted their infamous Chai Latte.

We had lunch at Amici and then gabbed the day away back at Starbucks.  By the time we packed up we all took separate cabs and I took one to Gateway where I walked the length of the mall down Edsa and waited for a bus there to take me to Pacita.

It was a day full of vehicular transfers and it was cool.  I got to go to places and go on routes that I’ve never been on before.  This type of day should have a repeat.

  1. Oh, I did the walking thing before, back when I was looking for a job. I walked down the length of Ayala one day (took the entire morning, since I went in every other building to submit my resume to five different offices), then Paseo de Roxas another day, then Makati Avenue on the last go. In heels. And in spite of the heat and the weirdass people on the street, it was actually fun. The place certainly feels more familiar now, which in turn makes me feel more secure.

And now that I’ve actually got a job, I still turn my nose at the Makati jeeps and walk to my destination.
