unravelling the thoughts of an emotional blockhead

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

Spoilers ahead!  Read at your own risk!

So for epsiode 8 of season 8, The Big Bang Theory presented us with The Prom Equivalency where the gang dresses up the building rooftop and have a prom do-over.  The boys get tuxes, the girls get dolled up, they rent a stretched limo and even set up their very own photobooth so they can capture magical moments like these:

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

This is mostly for the sake of the guys, who, quite obviously, did not have the best time during their own high school proms.  As is with most things related to high school, this experience rehashes a lot of issues, most especially for Wolowitz.

Anyway the bit the got me all teary-eyed was this scene, where Sheldon finally, finally, acknowledges his feelings for Amy.  And true to the Sheldon Cooper way, he does it by beating her to the punch of saying the L-word first.

Hold the phone, Sheldon just made me cry!

I love you…

There’s no denying I have feelings for you that can’t be explained in any other way. I briefly considered that I had a brain parasite. But that seems even more far-fetched. The only conclusion was love.

It’s all very verbose, of course, and on the surface it sounds very out-of-character, but then again every little inch of character growth would probably be OOC from the weirdly lovable season 1 Sheldon Cooper we all fell in love with.  But the whole line was delivered with such sincerity and Sheldon-ness that I was sort of surprised to find myself crying.

Personally I don’t mind the character growth; as much as I don’t like Amy as a romantic partner for Sheldon, I do admit that without her character pushing necessary changes, the show would become tired and old very quick.

I’m just happy they haven’t made Amy and Sheldon have sex yet.

Thoughts?
